On May 9 2016, a transit of Mercury across the face of the Sun took place. Mercury transits are relatively rare events, which can be observed from much of the world

The Department of Astronomical Sciences of the Faculty of Science at KAU monitored and documented the transit from its beginning until sunset.

The 2016 transit commenced on May 9 at 14:12 and ended later that same day at 21:42 UT, with mid-transit taking place at 17:57.

The previous transit was in November 2006.

The next Mercury transits will take place on November 11 2019.
