Students Practice their English in ELI Activities Commemorating the 91st Saudi National Day
The ELI marked the 91st Saudi National Day with a series of student activities designed to instill a patriotic spirit of national identity in the hearts and minds of its students. Events included a major speech by the President of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, fun and educational competitions for students, and written statements from students describing their feelings for their country.
The speech, delivered by His Excellency Sheikh Dr Abdulrahman Alsanad, President of the General Presidency of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, detailed the role of intellectual security in building the character of good citizens. The lecture, which was also attended by KAU President Prof. Abdulrahman Al-Youbi, took place at King Fahd Medical Center Theater in front of a limited live audience due to precautionary measures against Covid-19. It was live-streamed on YouTube in order to reach a much larger number of viewers in all sectors of the University.
The ELI also invited its students to take part in a video competition in which they were asked to speak in English about their patriotism in light of National Day, which is commemorated annually on September 23. The Competition Committee, which received many entries from both male and female students, will announce the winners of the competition next week.
Additionally, students received Saudi flags and souvenirs engraved with the 91st National Day slogan, “A Home for Us.” Students were also invited to post their thoughts in English about the country’s leadership, its development, security, social and economic progress, and educational opportunities on a special wall reserved inside the English Club hall.
The activities were successful in helping students reflect on the country’s past and present and the role they will play in its progressive future. All events took place in English to allow the students to use their English language skills to express their feelings for their country.
Saudi National Day commemorates the late King Abdulaziz’s announcement of the unification of modern Saudi Arabia on September 23, 1932.
